Description: Authentic Toledo Spain Pirate Sword/CUTLASS 18 Inch Blade24 Inches Overall ESPADA ANCHA - Spanish soldiers carried these between the 1700s and 1800s. The engravings are typical of Spanish military swords and colonial Spanish. These swords were used by many different countries because of the shipping trade. Pirates and travelers from Cuba, North Africa, the Caribbean, South America, Mexico, Spain etc. used these swords. TOLEDO steel was considered the best back then. Soldiers could have brought these back from the Mexican or Spanish American War too. Espada ancha means "wide sword" and is a Spanish colonial sword. They evolved in early 18th C from 17th C Spanish civilian or hunting broadswords whose 76–92 cm long blades were cut down to lengths between 45–66 cm. These were used by mounted militia, and presidial lancers, by civilians, especially mounted like traders, travelers/pirates and cattlemen; soldiers using usual military swords. Soldiers wore these swords on leather slings or affixed to the saddle; or inside waist belt hanging from the shell langet. THESE are actually pretty RARE which surprised me. Try finding information on these swords and you'll find out it's pretty difficult to even find a picture of one. The only ones I've seen were pictures from museums in Spain and Cuba, and a similar handle on Pinterest. The last three pictures show the same handle and blade engravings. You'll see the one is engraved "Toledo". HAPPY BIDDING!
