Following his kidnapping by Apaches as a child, he was raised as one and became a warrior. Later he joined the US Army's Apache scouts, serving at Fort Verde between December 1874 and May 1878 and was given the nickname Mickey Free. From an internet discussion: Feared by Geronimo and loathed by the U.S. Army, Mickey Free was a half-Irish, half-Mexican, one-eyed, redhead Indian scout who was raised by Apaches and then spent most of his life fomenting a 25-year war between the American military and the Apache tribes of southern Arizona and New Mexico in the 1860s and ’70s. “Mickey Free embodies three cultures. Culturally, he’s Apache; by heritage, he’s Irish and Mexican,” Free’s life with the Apaches began at age 11, when he was stolen from his family in the Sonoita Valley south of Tucson, Ariz., by a band of Aravaipa Apache Indians, looking for cattle to steal but instead happening upon a boy crouched in a fruit tree. The Apaches would raise him as one of their own, where he would become a fluent speaker of the tribal tongue and accomplished warrior all before this 18th birthday. But as war raged between the Apaches and the U.S. Army, in 1872 Free would enlist as Indian Scout with the U.S. Army to hunt down Apaches such as Geronimo while simultaneously subverting federal forces to aid various bands of the tribe that adopted him. “Everyone hated him, but everyone needed him,” Hutton said. “American soldiers needed him, Apaches need him. But at the same time, nearly everyone thought he was always lying to them. He has some unattractive qualities. Americans like people to take sides. Instead, Mickey takes the white side as an Apache, as well as the reverse.”
