The French Regency style is quite old, perhaps dating back to the late 18th or early 19th century. It is a very popular design with craftsmen, as all the men can be turned on a lathe, except for the knight. The pieces are not varnished. Kings are 2 1/2 inches in height, with a base of about 3/4 of an inch. Chess men are unweighted and unfelted. This is an analysis set. Some of the pieces have minor defects. Le Petit Jacques was a French nickname for apprentices; this set was probably made by an apprentice. You can see holes in some of the pieces where the lathe bits went in. The knights are rather simply cut. The Black king and one Black rook are missing a bit of their wood. One of the Black pawns is oversized and a dark brown. It is possible that this is a practice set made by an apprentice which then found its way into the marketplace. This set probably dates to before the First World War. I often wonder what happens to those lost pieces. Were they blown to bits by a German shell? Trampled underfoot by a harried and overworked waiter? Or do they lie in a child's toy box in France, cossetted away, waiting for the day when someone opens the box and asks, "I wonder what became of the rest of the set?" This set was loved by someone, as the men are colored by years of handling. These chess men are like the orphan girls in the Methuen Home where Beth Harmon spent her childhood. They await adoption by some kindly soul who will overlook their imperfections. This is the original box. Somewhere in the mists of time the advertising label fell off the lid, leaving the blank space behind. Worth every penny and then some. We provide Free insurance.
