Description: One of two available for sale, this flatweave rug is a truly remarkable find: a 5’x7’ remnant from a large, room-sized carpet designed by Arne Jacobsen, originally for the SAS Hotel in Copenhagen. While not known as a textile designer, Arne Jacobsen did create several carpet and textile designs specifically for the SAS Hotel. Those designs are documented in Michael Sheridan’s excellent book, Room 606: The SAS Hotel and the Work of Arne Jacobsen (pictured). A photo on page 42 of that volume depicts the same pattern as this carpet. The design is an interlocking geometric motif done in a palette of dark and light blue-grey tones – colors that Jacobsen favored. The carpet itself is composed of wool, machine-made and densely knotted. It’s in very good condition with no staining or areas of excessive wear. The rug has been professionally cleaned and edge-bound on all sides. And while the work was done competently, the binding process did leave an unsightly seam on the back side of the rug as seen in the photos. But this small flaw, while regrettable, is not visible on the front, and does not detract from the beauty of the rug in any way. Overall, this rug, with it’s connection to the SAS Hotel, is a remarkable relic from one of the most important design projects of the 20th century, and represents a rare opportunity to own an important piece of design history.
