Description: Vintage Henry Hughes & Sons - London, Maritime Sextant, Husun, MV Trevanion ll 1951 Dated around 1940-50's (potentially WW2) Original fitted mahogany case, with original oil bottle and pin etc Brass loop frame with original crackle paint finish. As purchase for and used on Ship MV Trevanion ll, which was owned by the Hain Steamship Company and operated by P&O Officer / Captain: J Stringfellow Full working order, including the lamp, which can be removed by the purchaser, if required (The batteries are located in the handle. Serial number 58831. I suspect that this sextant was purchased second-hand in 1951, looking at the serial number and the company had entered into a partnership before the dates, so subsequently traded as: Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird / Kelvin and Hughes. Engraved of the silver and brass scale arc - Made in Great Britain, H.Hughes & Sons Ltd, London Good used condition for age, with some superficial wear, marks, tarnishing and scratches to the case. The firm of Henry Hughes & Sons was founded in 1828 in London and was incorporated in 1903. They traded many maritime instruments under the brand name 'Husun'. In 1935 S. Smith & Sons Ltd took a controlling interest in the company and instruments traded under both the name of Hughes and Sons as well as Smith Instruments. During WWII a joint venture, Marine Instruments, was founded together with Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird Ltd. In 1947 the company merged with Kelvin Bottomley & Baird Ltd, Glasgow, Scotland to become Kelvin Hughes. Ship history: Completed 1944 as Trevanion for The Hain Steamship Company Ltd. 1955 - Sold to The Aviation & Shipping Company Ltd (N W Purvis, manager), London, and renamed Avisbrook. 1960 - Sold to Integritas Shipping Company Ltd, Greece, and renamed Michalis. 1967- Sold to Taiwan shipbreakers.
