Description: ***********FOR PARTS/REPAIR - The hacking automatic movement runs strong. However, while the seconds hand runs continuously over an average 41 hour power reserve period the minute and hour hands don't want to move on their own, likely suggesting an issue with the cannon pinion. The date and time can be set without issue and the crown winds with a moderate amount of tension. Given that the minute and hour hands don't move as they should on their own and considering the movement's unknown service history at a minimum a complete overhaul is required.***********This vintage late 1960's/early 1970's Zodiac Sea Wolf has a glossy black "SWISS T < 25 MC" signed dial that is in lovely but not perfect condition as it shows difficult to see wear and a small indentation to the left of the "A" in "Automatic." This can be most clearly seen in picture 9. This indentation can only be seen from certain angles and when the light is hitting it just right. The lume, which emits a quick burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged to a warm buttermilk hue. As seen in the pictures the minute and hour hand lume shows cracking. In my humble opinion in person and on the wrist the dial and patina present beautifully. The bezel, which shows wear and the loss of its original black enamel paint, rotates bidirectionally with an appropriate amount of tension. The all stainless steel case shows honest wear with no visually noticeable signs of oxidation. The outside of the case back is stamped "ZODIAC SEAWOLF WATER-TESTED 20 ATM ESPECIALLY" and between the lugs at 6 o'clock are the stamped numbers "1888378." The crystal shows scratching. While I normally show pictures of the movements of watches I put up for sale I don't feel comfortable removing the case back on this watch. The case back on Sea Wolf's are notoriously difficult to remove and should be done by a skilled watchmaker familiar with how to do so in order to avoid causing damage. The hacking automatic movement with semi-quickset date function runs strong and the date wheel rolls over at 12 am. The hack feature works by pulling out the crown which stops the seconds hand. When the crown is pushed back in the seconds hand resumes running. However, while the seconds hand runs continuously over an average 41 hour power reserve period the minute and hour hands don't want to move on their own, likely suggesting an issue with the cannon pinion. The semi-quickset date function works flawlessly by manually rolling over a new date and then moving the hour hand repeatedly between the 20 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. The original signed, non-screwdown crown winds with a moderate amount of tension. Given that the minute and hour hands don't want to move as they should on their own and considering the movement's unknown service history at a minimum a complete overhaul is required. This watch measures approximately 35 mm excluding the crown, approximately 38.5 mm including the crown and approximately 17.75 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 8.5 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 10.5 mm. At a minimum a complete overhaul is required. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. For this watch that time is now.
