Description: VTG Tool Check Brass Tag: NATIONAL SPUN SILK CO New Bedford, MA; Largest US Mill This is an old 1-3/8" employee tool check tag from the National Spun Silk Company, once a giant in the silk fabrics business. Marcus Frieder was an established silk fabrics business owner with early operations primarily in Pennsylvania. He chose to expand his business into New England in 1917, when he organized the National Spun Silk Company and built the largest spun silk mill in the United States at New Bedford, Massachusetts. In January 1927 the General Silk Corporation was formed as a holding and sales company for all of Frieder's operations including National Spun Silk Company. As times changed, Frieder's business was greatly affected by the rise of rayon as a substitute for silk and eventually the New Bedford operation was forced to close.
