Description: Master Silversmiths, George and Lupe (Lupeta) Leekity are from the Zuni Pueblo and are some of the most famous Native American artists of our time. The Leekity's specialize in sandcast silver work with turquoise settings which they learned from the master silversmith Zuni jewelry maker, Lupe's father, Horace lule. Leekity and her husband George carry on her father's casting tradition. Known for his mastery of silvercasting, Horace Iule was one of the first Zunis to produce the mythological Knife-Wing figure in silver. He is best known today for his castwork crosses. Lupeta worked with her father starting at the age of 13. George and Lupeta still use her father's designs, casting new pieces from his originals. When they use Horace Iule's designs, they stamp "Iule" on them. When they use George's original designs, they stamp "G & L Leekity" on them, as is this piece. This set is a stunning, handmade, squash blossom necklace and earrings is sterling silver with Sleeping Beauty turquoise. The Sleeping Beauty mine is no longer in operation and Sleeping Beauty Turquoise is more in demand than ever due to its scarcity and beautiful color.
