Description: This lot consists of three volumes from a set of books containing the complete works of John Ruskin (1819-1900), thewell known English writer, philosopher, and art critic of the Victorian era. Ruskin wrote on subjects as varied as art, geology, architecture, myth, botany, ornithology, literature, education, and political economy. These books were once owned by a notable early 20th century Columbus, Ohio architect,George H. Bulford (1870-1942), who wasa founding member of the architectural firmRichards, McCarty & Bulford. Richards, McCarty & Bulford was called the "preeminent" architectural firm of the city of Columbus, Ohio, by the General Services Administration. A number of the firm's works are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. PLEASE NOTE: I am also selling Volume I of this set in a separate eBay listing. That volume is signed by George H. Bulford. THE COMPLETE WORKSOF JOHN RUSKIN(Volumes V, VIII, & IX) published circa 1905 by the Chesterfield Society. This was a numbered edition, limited to 750 sets. Volume I (which is being sold separately) states that this set was number 550 of the 750 sets. Unfortunately, the other volumes in the set do not have the number "550" printed inside them, although they do each have the statement " Edition De Luxe, limited to seven hundred and fifty sets " printed inside. Also, please note that while Volume I is signed by George H. Bulford, none of these threevolumes have anything identifying them as having once belonged to him. These are hardback books, 8.5" by 5.7". The top edge of the pages are gold-tipped. Each volume has many b/w illustrations. There is also one color illustration facingthe title page of each volume. Those color illustrations are each protected by a thin tissue. Each book has multiple sections that areseparately paginated, so that the total number of pages in each book given here is an approximation. Volume V: about 790 pages Volume VIII: about 920 pages Volume IX: about 770 pages The books all have noticeable damage to the spine, with chips flaking off the cover. Otherwise, they are in good condition, with the binding still strong, and some general wear. Volume VIII is in the best condition of thesethree books, while volumes V and IX bothhave a large piece of the cover on their spines separated from the cover, which probably should be reglued to the binding (please check the last two photos).
