Description: X-PLANES " width="100%" height="90" border="0"> X-PLANES Film collection DVD Video Description Loose Cannon is proud to preserve the USA's military history via its unique DVD film collections. Using a combination of U.S. Dept. of Defense archive films, combat footage, and period newsreels of the time, each film features actual wartime footage and or first-person accounts from those that were there. X-Planes The American X-planes were a series of experimental United States aircraft and rockets, used to test and evaluate new technologies and aerodynamic concepts. They have an X designator within the US system of aircraft designations, which denotes the experimental research mission. The X-planes concept officially came into being in 1944, as a joint programme between the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the US Navy and the US Army Air Force in order to pursue research into high-speed aircraft. X-planes have since accomplished many aviation "firsts" including breaking speed and altitude barriers, varying wing sweep in flight, implementing exotic alloys and propulsion innovations or technologies. This 2-DVD set contains a collection of historical films of a large number of these X planes. Below is a list of the footage on each disc: DVD #1 - Reach Beyond the Horizon Film depicts the history of Edwards AFB, as a premier aircraft test center in the California high desert. Be sure to watch all of the credits to see a rare nose-cam view of one of the Shuttle glide landing tests from Fall of 1977. 40 min. - X-1 / X1-A Flights Beginning in 1946, two XS-1 experimental research aircraft (later redesignated X-1s) conducted pioneering tests at Muroc Army Air Field (now Edwards Air Force Base) in California to obtain flight data on conditions in the transonic speed range. These early tests culminated on October 14, 1947, in the first piloted flight faster than Mach 1.0, the speed of sound. During November, 1947, the Air Force authorized studies that led to a contract with Bell Aircraft to build four improved X-1 aircraft. Designated X-1A , X-1B and X-1D , the airplanes were ready by late 1950. 14 min. - X-2 thru X-5 Misc. films depicting the X-2 through X-5 testing and in flight. The X-2 was a swept-wing aircraft designed to fly three times as fast as the speed of sound. It was flown to investigate the problems of aerodynamic heating and stability and control effectiveness at high speeds and altitudes. Also shown, Douglas X-3 Stiletto, Northrup X-4 Bantam, Bell X-5. 3 min - X-10 thru X-13 Flight and ground footage of North American X-10 missile testbed, and the Ryan X-13 Vertijet. 1 Hr. 31 min. DVD #2 - Man in Space: Today, Tomorrow and Titan III Parts I and II. Excellent documentary on NASA research efforts with lifting bodies. Film covers the cancelled X-20 Dyna Soar project and the lifting body flight tests. 51 min - X-24 The Martin Marietta X-24 was an American experimental aircraft developed from a joint United States Air Force-NASA program named PILOT. It was designed and built to test lifting body concepts, experimenting with the concept of unpowered reentry and landing, later used by the Space Shuttle. 6.5 min - X-Fighters Initial Flight tests of various experimental aircraft/fighters. Scenes at Muroc Air Force Base. XF-85 Goblin XF-86. XF-87. XF-88. XF-89. XF-90. XF-91. XF-92A at Muroc. X-1 starts down runway for take off. X-4. A X-4 and F-80 in flight. 9 min. - XV-5 Ryan XV-5A flight, hover and landing tests. 16 min.
