When it flowers it grows a spear like spike which can grow up to 2 metres high. Prefers a light well-drained soil in an open sunny position. Frost resistant but drought tender. Although seed can be sown most of the year, it is generally best sown in spring, summer or autumn, avoid the coldest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C for this species. Xanthorrhoea germinate readily from seed with no special pre-treatment.Sow seed on surface of a porous seed raising mix and cover to a depth of 1-2 mm. Do not bury seed deeply. Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed. Place in a warm shaded or semi shaded position to avoid dying out. Keep warm & moist, avoid drying out or waterlogging the growing mix. Germination generally occurs in around 10-28 days in the right condition.In recent years I have found it is easier to germinate these inside a sealed bag with water placed in a warm dark cupboard. In New Zealand these cupboards are called hot water cupboards where our hot water cylinder is but I think other countries have different names for them?You have the option of sending via regular air mail or expedited shipping. Please choose the expedited shipping option if you would like a tracking number even though it is more expensive, because if you opt for regular mail, I cannot provide a tracking number. If your address is in South America, Arabian Peninsula or Africa you MUST choose expedited shipping. Normal mail often does not seem to get to these destinations from New Zealand. Expedited shipping takes less than 1 week worldwide. Regular mail to the rest of the world (apart from the above geographical regions) often takes 4-6 weeks.
